Some Challenges in Agri-tourism Development in the Philippines: Part 1

Some Challenges in Agri-tourism Development in the Philippines: Part 1
By Elmer R. Esplana, May 24, 2011

1.      Filipino farmers need to be entrepreneurial in order to develop new skills (fundamental business    competencies) required to become successful and become competitive in agri-tourism project or business venture.

2.   Economics activities on farm business advisory processes, training and support of agri-tourism development and agri-tourism business management provider/s should also be developed/strengthened.

3. Agri-tourism has to enhance and develop community organization and partnership of stakeholders between each other in different parts of the country, based on the competitive agri-tourism resources that they have, and where they can also excel.

4.    Agri-tourism industry players, as an agribusiness activities in the country, should learn to realize the upgrading of urban or even rural farming from a single-production function to multi-functions (diversification and integration), including comprehensive scientific research to promote agricultural efficiency and increase the farmer's or entrepreneur's income.

  1. Our country is an agricultural which means Agritourism is suited to our places. But we need to develop our place and make a good agricultural system in order to help people in pursuing Agritourism.

  2. Yes, I agree with you. That is the reason why I am an advocate of agri-tourism development as part of the agribusiness development of this country. Aside from the leisure things in agri-tourism, we need to develop and promote farm-based tourism sites similar to the likes of Bohol Bee Farm (Bohol) of Vicky Wallace which could be found in www.boholbeefarm.com; Costales Nature Farms (Laguna) of Josephine Costales at www.costalesnaturefarms.com and Pamora Farm (Abra) of Tina Morados-Papillon at www.pamorafarm.com. More than anything else is that, these farm-based tourism sites basically promotes the agribusiness development of our agricultural country. We need to capitalize our natural resources (farm) as our competitive advantage in addition to the products and services that these farms have already been promoting among their clients (local and foreigner). I presume that Thurderbird Casino is not a farm-based tourist destination, but more of a tourism site. You have to have a farm-based products and services similar to what you can see from the three farms I have mentioned, as the basis for being an agri-tourism sites. I hope we can develop more sites like these in different agribusiness/agri-tourism models applicable to their respective areas in the country where they can flourish and excel.
